Giselinde Kuipers is a professor of cultural sociology at the
University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Giselinde studied cultural anthropology at Utrecht University, with
a brief stint at the University of Seville in Spain. In 2001, she received her
PhD in sociology (with distinction) from the University of Amsterdam.
|Before taking up her current
position, she worked at the department of communication
studies at the University of Amsterdam, spent a year as
visiting fellow at the University of Pennsylvania in
Philadelphia (USA), and was a postdoc at Erasmus
University Rotterdam. Between 2009 and 2012, she was (part
time) Norbert Elias Professor at the Department of
Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
Giselinde has published widely in the fields of cultural sociology, the sociology of humor, media studies, and cultural globalization and transnational culture. Much of this research is comparative: Giselinde has done research in several European countries (the Netherlands, France, Italy and Poland) as well as the US. In 2006, she published Good Humor, Bad Taste: A Sociology of the Joke, comparing Dutch and American humor styles. A new revised edition of this book has appeared in 2015.
From 2004 to 2009, she has been working on a research project studying the diffusion, translation and reception of American comedy in four European countries. This project was funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). This research project has led to several articles on the globalization of humor, the transnational television field, and an article in the prestigious Amercican Sociological Review on screen translation in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland.
In 2010, Giselinde Kuipers started a new 5-year research project called "Towards a comparative sociology of beauty: The transnational modeling industry and the social shaping of beauty standards in six European countries". This project is funded with an Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). It has its own website at www.sociologyofbeauty.nl.
Also in 2010, she held her inaugural lecture at Erasmus University Rotterdam, entitled "Her Majesty's Bicycle: On Sociological Habitus and National Comparison". The English version of this lecture can be found here, the Dutch version here.
Giselinde works with PhD researchers on various topics in the broadly defined field of comparative cultural sociology (see the list on her CV). She teaches courses on social theory and cultural sociology at the University of Amsterdam,. Between 2012 and 2016, she was editor-in-chief of Humor: international journal of humor research.
In 2014, Giselinde, together with Olav Velthuis, founded the Cultural Sociology program group within the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research. As of August 2015, Giselinde has become the Chair of the Sociology Department.
